Entity Profile Types


The Department of State recognizes three types of entities:

  • Non-Profit Entity
  • For-Profit Entity
  • Governmental Entity

A non-profit entity is an individual, organization or other group whose primary purpose is dedicated to furthering a particular social cause or advocating for a particular point of view while not making a profit.

A for-profit entity is an organization or other group whose primary purpose is dedicated to furthering a particular interest, typically its own, while making a profit.

A governmental entity is any federal, state, or local government office who engages in lobbying.
